Who is this visa for?

You should read this information if you are applying for your first or second Working Holiday visa.

This visa is for people aged 18 to 30 years of age, who are interested in a working holiday of up to 12 months in Australia.

Important: Applicants must have turned 18, but not turned 31, at the time of visa application.

This visa allows you to supplement the cost of your holiday through incidental employment. If your primary reason for travelling to Australia is to participate in the work force, you should consider a visa designed for that purpose.

People who have worked as a seasonal worker in regional Australia for a minimum of three months while on their first Working Holiday visa, may be eligible to apply for a second Working Holiday visa.

What does this visa let me do?

If you are granted this visa you can:

* enter Australia within 12 months of grant
* stay up to 12 months
* leave and re-enter Australia any number of times while the visa is valid
* work in Australia for up to 6 months with each employer
* study or train for up to 4 months.

Note: If you applied for your Working Holiday visa before 1 July 2006, you may:

* undertake study or training for up to 3 months
* work for up to 6 months with each employer

Important: Your visa will have a condition limiting work with each employer to 3 months however, all visa holders have been granted permission to work for up to 6 months with each employer.

The main purpose of this visa is to allow you to combine a holiday with work and supplement your funds with incidental work in Australia.

Applying
First Working Holiday visa

Applications must be made from outside Australia.

First Working Holiday visa online applications can be lodged from anywhere outside Australia.

Most first Working Holiday visa paper applications can also be lodged anywhere outside Australia by mailing, faxing or hand-delivering the application form to any departmental office outside Australia.

Second Working Holiday visa

Applications may be made from either in or outside Australia.
Visa validity

Important: If you are granted a Working Holiday visa and an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), you will activate the Working Holiday visa on arrival in Australia. If you want to travel on the ETA, you must have your Working Holiday visa cancelled.

Any time spent outside Australia while on your first or second Working Holiday visa does not extend the length of the visa.

First Working Holiday visa

If you are granted your first Working Holiday visa you can:

* travel to Australia at any time in the 12 months from the date the visa is granted*
* stay in Australia for 12 months from the date you first enter the country
* leave and re-enter Australia any number of times within the 12 months from the date you first entered the country.

Second Working Holiday visa

The table below outlines how long you can stay in Australia if you are granted a second Working Holiday visa, depending on your circumstances at the time of application.

You were outside Australia

You can:

* travel to Australia at any time in the 12 months from the date your second Working Holiday visa is granted*
* stay in Australia for 12 months from the date you first enter the country on your second Working Holiday visa.

*Note: The 12 month validity period cannot be extended or deferred.

Accompanying family

You cannot include family members in your application for this visa. If a family member or partner wants to come with you to Australia, they must apply for their own visa to Australia.

Working

You can do any kind of work in Australia. However, you can only work with the same employer for up to six months. The ’employer’ is the business for which you are working directly.

Note: If you applied for your Working Holiday visa before 1 July 2006, you may work for up to 6 months with each employer. Your visa will have a conditions limiting work with each employer to 3 months, however, all visa holders have been granted permission to work for up to 6 months with each employer.

If you intend to work in your own occupation, you should check if you need to be registered or licensed by contacting the relevant assessing body in Australia.

If your main reason for coming to Australia is to work, you should consider the type of visa intended for work purposes, such as a business visa.

You are entitled to access your retirement savings (superannuation) when you leave Australia. The Australian Taxation Office website provides more information on accessing this money. Follow the links for temporary residents.

You can study or train for a maximum of four months. However, if you applied for your Working Holiday visa before 1 July 2006, you are limited to three months study or training. If you study with one education provider while on your first Working Holiday visa, you can return to the same education provider for a further four months on your second Working Holiday visa.

If you wish to study for a longer period in Australia, you may be able to apply for a student visa.

You must depart Australia when your visa ends, unless you apply for another type of visa to extend your stay. A first Working Holiday visa cannot be extended beyond the 12 month validity period. However, if you have completed three months seasonal work in regional Australia on your first Working Holiday visa, you may be eligible to apply for a second Working Holiday visa.

There are other visa options for remaining temporarily or permanently in Australia at the end of your working holiday. However, your eligibility depends on your circumstances and intentions.

Note: If you apply for a Tourist visa while in Australia on a Working Holiday visa, it can only be granted in exceptional circumstances, such as being unfit to travel.

Applicant: First Working Holiday Visa Eligibility

To be eligible for your first Working Holiday visa, you must meet a number of requirements.
General requirements

You must:

* be outside Australia when you apply and, when your visa is granted.
* not have entered Australia on a Working Holiday visa before
* be aged between 18 and 30 years (inclusive) at the time of applying
* be applying no more than 12 months before you intend to travel to Australia.
* not have dependent children
* hold a passport for a country or region participating with Australia in the Working Holiday Maker programme

Health requirements

All applicants are required to meet health criteria. Depending on your circumstances, you may need to undertake a medical examination which may include a chest x-ray, HIV, Hepatitis B and/or Hepatitis C test.

All required health examinations must be completed before a decision can be made on your visa application.

If you need a medical examination, the cost is not included in the visa application charge (fee) you pay when you lodge your application.

Note: If you are applying from outside Australia, the required health examinations are outlined under the heading ‘Stay of greater than 3 months, up to and including 12 months’.

Health insurance

Medical treatment in Australia can be very expensive. As a tourist, you are not covered by Australia’s national health scheme, unless there is a reciprocal health care agreement between Australia and your country. Health care for visitors to Australia is explained on the Medicare Australia website.
It is recommended that you take out health insurance for yourself and your family for the duration of your stay in Australia.

Private health funds cover you for treatment as a private patient in private or public hospitals and can include some services such as dental and optical services. The costs and types of cover vary widely so if you decide to get private health insurance, it is important to check the details carefully before you take out the policy.

You must have access to sufficient funds to support yourself for the initial stage of your holiday. Generally, AUD$5,000 may be regarded as sufficient, but the amount may vary depending on your length of stay and the extent of your travel. You should also have a return or onward ticket or the funds for a fare to depart Australia.

You may be asked to provide evidence. Evidence may include a certified copy of a bank statement and an air ticket out of Australia.

Extending your stay

To be eligible for a second Working Holiday visa, you must have completed three months seasonal work in regional Australia while on your first Working Holiday visa.

Seasonal work

Seasonal work is any type of work that is undertaken as the employee of a primary producer, including:

* plant and animal cultivation
o harvesting and/or packing fruit and vegetable crops
o pruning and trimming vines and trees
o general maintenance crop work
o cultivating or propagating plants, fungi or their products or parts
o immediate processing of plant products
o maintaining animals for the purpose of selling them or their bodily produce, including natural increase
o immediate processing of animal products including shearing, butchery, packing and tanning
o manufacturing dairy produce from raw material
* fishing and pearling
o conducting operations relating directly to taking or catching fish and other aquatic species
o conducting operations relating directly to taking or culturing pearls or pearl shell
* tree farming and felling
o planting or tending trees in a plantation or forest that are intended to be felled
o felling trees in a plantation or forest
o transporting trees or parts of trees that were felled in a plantation or forest to the place where they are first to be milled or processed or from which they are to be transported to the place where they are to be milled or processed.

Note: The work does not need to be paid work. Work undertaken as a volunteer or through the Willing Workers on Organic Farms (WWOOF) scheme can also count toward the three months of seasonal work.
How to calculate seasonal work

Important: To be eligible for a second Working Holiday visa, applicants must complete at least three months of seasonal work in one of the postcode areas. Please be aware that some vacancies on the Harvest Trail website may not be in postcode list. For example, some postcodes in the Hunter Valley do not fit within the definition of Regional Australia.

Conditions:

You must maintain all your visa conditions while working and holidaying in Australia.

Visa Conditions

You must comply with all your visa conditions while in Australia on a Working Holiday visa. In addition to the work and study limitations, a number of additional visa conditions may also be imposed on your first or second Working Holiday visa by a decision officer. A breach of any of these conditions may result in your visa being cancelled and you may have to leave Australia.

Studying

You must not study or undertake training in Australia for longer than four months. If you study or train while on your first Working Holiday visa, you may return to the same institution if granted a second Working Holiday visa.

Four months is interpreted as 17 weeks of actual study excluding holidays.

Note: If you applied for your Working Holiday visa before 1 July 2006, you are limited to three months of study or training.

Working

If you are granted this visa, you can do any kind of work in Australia and may work with the same employer for up to six months. The six month work limitation applies to full-time, casual or shift work.

Important: If you applied for your Working Holiday visa before 1 July 2006, you may work for up to six months with each employer. Your visa will have a condition limiting work with each employer to three months however, all visa holders have been granted permission to work for up to six months with each employer.

The ’employer’ is the business for which you are working directly.

If you are referred by an agency or labour supplier to a business, you can work for six months for that business. The same agency or labour supplier can refer you to another business where you can work for another six months. For the purpose of the six month limitation, the ’employer’ is considered to be the business for which you are working directly, even if you are being paid by an agency or labour supplier.

You cannot stay in the same job beyond six months by using different employment agencies, business affiliates or sub-contracting arrangements.

Extending the work limitation

In exceptional circumstances, it may be possible to extend the period of work with one employer to longer than six months. An extension may be allowed for a very short period of time and only if there is sufficient justification to grant it.

Requests should be submitted in writing, to the department and must include a letter of support from the employer.

Important: Submit your request at least two weeks before the expiry of the six month employment limitation.

La loi australienne actuellement en vigueur, ne permet pas aux personnes ne possédant pas un passeport d’un des pays cités ci-dessus de demander un visa de ‘Vacances-Travail’. Il n’y a pas d’exception.

NOUVEAUTE :

A partir du 1 novembre 2005 les personnes qui ont déjà bénéficié d’un premier Visa Vacances-Travail ET qui ont fait au moins trois mois de récoltes saisonniers dans certaines régions d’Australie pourront demander un DEUXIEME Visa Vacances-Travail.

A partir du 1 novembre 2005 les personnes qui ont déjà bénéficié d’un premier Visa Vacances Travail ET qui ont fait au moins trois mois de récoltes saisonniers dans certaines régions d’Australie pourront demander un Deuxième Visa Vacances-Travail directement en Australie ou depuis l’étranger. En plus de continuer à remplir les conditions générales de Visa Vacances Travail les demandeurs d’un Deuxième Visa Vacances-Travail auront besoin de fournir la preuve de trois mois de récoltes saisonniers dans certaines régions d’Australie.

Pour faire une demande de visa ‘Vacances-Travail’ :

Faites votre demande de visa ‘Vacances-Travail’ directement sur internet à http://www.immi.gov.au/e_visa/working-holiday.htm

* Le Visa Vacances Travail est pour les 18-30 ans. C’est-à-dire que vous devez avoir plus de 18 ans et moins de 31 ans au moment de la demande. Vous devez être en dehors de l’Australie, avoir un passeport d’un des pays cités en haut, ne pas avoir d’enfants à charge et ne pas avoir déjà bénéficié d’un Visa Vacances Travail pour l’Australie.
* Vous devez pouvoir justifier d’au moins 3000 Euros sur un compte en banque (eg. extrait de compte, lettre de votre banque précisant votre situation financière ou celle de vos parents…).
* Cette preuve pourrait vous être demandée lorsque vous vous rendez en Australie (munissez vous en Australie d’un relevé de compte bancaire ou d’une lettre de la banque qui pourrait vous être demandé au moment où votre visa sera collé dans votre passeport en Australie – cette preuve ne vous sera pas demandée avant votre départ)

Pour faire une demande par internet il vous faudra :
– Une adresse émail valable et un accès internet ;
– Un passeport qui sera valable pour toute la durée de votre séjour en Australie (il est très important de faire la demande avec un passeport qui sera valable jusqu’à la fin de votre séjour en Australie);
– Une carte de crédit valable (pour payer les frais de demande par internet) – vous pouvez régler les frais avec une carte bancaire international Visa, Mastercard, American Express ou Diner’s Club International.

– Examens médicaux : d’une manière générale, un bilan médical n’est pas requis. Cependant, selon chaque demande, une radio des poumons vous sera peut-être demandée. Si il est nécessaire, il vous sera demandé après le dépôt de votre demande de télécharger et imprimer le formulaire 160EH afin de faire une radio des poumons chez un medecin agréé. Le medecin agréé enverra les examens directement aux services d’immigration de l’Ambassade d’Australie à Paris.
* Vous serez averti par émail directement par les services en Australie si votre demande est acceptée. Veuillez noter que le Visa ‘Vacances-Travail’ électronique n’apparait pas dans votre passeport. Il sera verifié électroniquement par votre compagnie aérienne avant l’embarquement et lors de votre arrivée en Australie.

* Pour l’autorisation de travailler, une fois arrivé en Australie vous devez vous rendre dans le bureau d’immigration le plus proche (ou directement au bureau à l’aeroport de Sydney) pour mettre l’étiquette du visa ‘Vacances-Travail’ dans votre passeport. La liste des bureaux d’immigration en Australie se trouvent au site internet du gouvernement australien

A tout moment vous pouvez verifier l’état de votre demande faite par internet en entrant le numéro de transaction (Transaction Reference Number) composé de dix lettres et/ou chiffres qui vous est attribué lors de votre paiement sécurisé en ligne.

IMPORTANT : pour toute question concernant une demande de Visa Vacances-Travail qui a été déposée par internet, vous devez envoyer un émail en anglais à eVisa.WHM.Helpdesk@immi.gov.au mentionnant votre numéro de transaction. Notez que le bureau de Paris ne traite pas votre demande donc ne pourra pas vous reseigner sur l’état de votre demande. Toutes les demandes de Visa Vacances Travail sont traitées directement en Australie (en Tasmanie).

Si votre demande est approuvée automatiquement par le système informatique vous serez averti par émail si votre demande est acceptée dans un délai d’environ 48 heures. Sinon il faut compter environ 4 semaines pour avoir une réponse sur votre demande. Sachez qu’il pourrait toujours y avoir des complications dans une demande, donc pour éviter tout retard de votre départ souhaité, nous vous conseillons de faire votre demande AU MOINS deux mois à l’avance et de ne pas confirmer votre billet d’avion avant d’avoir la confirmation de votre Visa Vacances-Travail par e-mail.

Des examens médicaux seront-ils demandés ?

D’une manière générale, un bilan médical n’est pas requis. Cependant, selon chaque demande, une radio des poumons vous sera peut-être demandée. Combien de temps puis-je rester en Australie ?

A partir de la date où le Visa Vacances-Travail vous est accordé vous avez 12 mois pour faire votre première entrée sur le territoire australien. Ensuite, à partir de votre première entrée sur le territoire australien, vous pouvez faire des entrées et sorties multiples pendant encore 12 mois . C’est-à-dire que les 12 mois sur le territoire australien commencent seulement dès votre arrivée en Australie. Vous pouvez donc faire votre demande de visa jusqu’à 12 mois avant votre date de départ souhaitée.

Combien de temps faut-il compter pour avoir une réponse sur ma demande ?

Si votre demande est approuvée automatiquement par le système informatique vous serez averti par émail si votre demande est acceptée dans un délai d’environ 48 heures. Sinon il faut compter environ 4 semaines pour avoir une réponse sur votre demande.

Combien de temps puis-je travailler pour chaque employeur en Australie ?

Depuis le 1er juillet 2006, vous pouvez travailler jusqu’à six mois maximum avec le même employeur en Australie.

Combien de Visas Vacances-Travail seront accordés par an ?

Il n’y a pas de quota pour les personnes de nationalité française et belge, c’est-à-dire que le nombre de visas Vacances-Travail est illimité pour les jeunes français et belges.
