Triste nouvelle, je vous laisse en prendre connaissance.
Backpacker accident investigation focuses on intersection
Investigations will continue today into an accident between a mini-bus and a car in south-east Queensland, which claimed the lives of three overseas tourists. The bus was carrying nine young backpackers when it collided with a four-wheel drive north-west of Bundaberg yesterday.
Three of the tourists were killed – a 27-year-old woman from France and a 21-year-old woman and 19-year-old man, both from Germany.
Eight others, including two in the other car, were injured.
Overnight, five of the injured were airlifted to hospitals in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast.
Senior Constable Ron Mientjes says investigations into the cause are continuing.
« We’re not sure whether it was one vehicle failing to give way as it entered the intersection, » he said.
« It appears at the preliminary stages that the vehicle travelling in the westerly direction has entered onto the intersection. »
Police say the backpackers had been in Australia on a working holiday.
Kim Augustine’s home is about 10 metres from the crash site. She says there have been other serious accidents at the intersection.
« There’s been a few over the years, usually a few months apart, but usually pretty bad, » she said.
« I was glad that that tree was there stopping one of the cars otherwise it would have kept rolling to the house, I imagine. »
There have been other fatalities on Queensland roads across the weekend, with two motorcyclists dying in separate accidents.
A man was killed when his bike left the road at Ravenshoe near Cairns in the state’s far north yesterday afternoon.
On the Sunshine Coast, a 21-year-old man died when his bike collided with a car at Maroochydore just after midday.
Also on the Sunshine Coast, a nine-year-old boy remains in a critical condition in hospital after his pushbike collided with a car at Currimundi late yesterday.
