Problemes pour passer d’un student visa au occupational trai

My name is Andrijano and I arrived in Sydney the 26th july 2004 with a e-student visa which will end the 31st january 2005. I am currently doing an exchange program at the Macquarie University. I am planning to make an full paid internship of at least 6 months. I already find the company and I was prepared to apply for an occupational trainee visa. But I have seen something which desapointed me. I have to get out of this amazing country during all the procedure! I called to the immigration (Sydney) and they told me that it will take a couple of weeks (at least 1 month). So i am now in a big problem because I wanted to stay here cause making a go and back to Franceis very expensive and even I could go to NZ or fiji but as I havn’t got anything fixed concerning the dates for receiving an answear from the immigration, I can’t aford to do this trip!

What are the alternatives for being able to make my internship without leaving Australia. I heard about switching to a visitors visa and apply after for the trainee one. Sponsorship? I heard some friends that had only to leave australia for few days, is it true because the guy on the phone from the immigration told me few weeks!
