Aboriginal death in custody case returns to court

A New South Wales woman who alleges her husband was murdered by Northern Territory prison officers 20 years ago has had her case mentioned briefly in the Darwin Magistrates Court.

Letty Scott alleges her husband, Douglas Scott, was murdered at Berrimah prison in July 1985 by four prison officers.

Mrs Scott claims the cover-up of Douglas Scott’s death extended into the 1991 Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, which found that he hung himself.

She has brought private criminal charges against three Territory prison officers for the assault and murder of her husband. A fourth officer allegedly involved has since died.

Mrs Scott today asked that the matter be adjourned until April to allow related civil matters to be dealt with by the Northern Territory Supreme Court.
